Indoor Cat Care in the UAE: A Guide for the Emirates Climate

In the United Arab Emirates, keeping cats exclusively indoors is not simply a preference — it is the only responsible choice for pedigree cats. The outdoor environment presents extreme heat, hazards from traffic and urban infrastructure, exposure to disease, and the risk of encounters with wildlife. Every pedigree cat we place is an indoor cat, and the quality of that indoor life is our primary concern.

The good news is that pedigree cats — particularly the breeds we work with — are inherently well-suited to indoor living. They have been selected over generations for temperament qualities that make them adaptable, content, and resilient in domestic environments. The challenge for UAE owners is not convincing their cat to accept indoor life, but ensuring that indoor life is rich, stimulating, and physically appropriate.

UAE summers bring outdoor temperatures that are hostile to both humans and animals. Air conditioning is essential, but it brings its own considerations. Pedigree cats — particularly hairless breeds such as the Sphynx, and long-coated breeds such as the Persian — are sensitive to temperature extremes in both directions.

A comfortable indoor temperature for a pedigree cat is generally between 20–24°C. Air conditioning should be consistent rather than dramatically variable — the shift from a cold, heavily air-conditioned interior to a warm space is more stressful than either temperature alone. Ensure your cat has access to warm resting spots (a heated pad, a blanket-lined bed) and is not positioned directly in the flow of cold air from vents.

Dehydration is a genuine concern for indoor cats in the UAE, even in climate-controlled environments. Cats are not naturally inclined to drink sufficient water — they evolved as desert animals that obtained most of their moisture from prey. In the modern domestic context, this means active management of water intake is important.

Fresh water should always be available in multiple locations. Many cats prefer running water — a pet fountain that circulates and aerates the water encourages higher intake and is one of the most impactful investments a UAE cat owner can make. Wet food, which typically contains 70–80% moisture, is a valuable supplement to a dry-food diet from a hydration perspective.

A cat that lives exclusively indoors relies entirely on its owner for environmental stimulation. Without adequate enrichment, indoor cats can develop boredom-related behaviours — excessive grooming, destructive scratching, increased vocalisation, or lethargy. These are not signs of a difficult cat; they are signs of a cat whose needs are not being met.

Vertical space is the single most impactful investment you can make for an indoor cat. A tall, sturdy cat tree positioned near a window provides climbing, scratching, observation, and access to natural light — which matters for circadian rhythm even through glass. Window bird feeders placed outside a window your cat can watch provide hours of passive stimulation.

Interactive play sessions of fifteen to twenty minutes, twice daily, are the foundation of a well-stimulated indoor cat's routine. Rotate toys regularly to maintain novelty. Puzzle feeders that make your cat work for part of its daily food ration provide cognitive challenge and slow eating to a healthier pace.

Indoor cats still require regular veterinary attention. Annual health checks, vaccination updates, parasite prevention (even indoor cats can be exposed to parasites via owners' clothing or from windows), and dental health monitoring are all essential.
