Sphynx Cat Care Guide: The Complete Owner's Handbook

The Sphynx is unlike any other cat — hairless, intensely warm-skinned, and extraordinarily affectionate. Here is everything you need to care for one in the UAE.

The Sphynx: A Cat Like No Other

The Sphynx appears alien at first glance — hairless, wrinkled, with enormous ears and a remarkably muscular body that feels warm to the touch like no other cat. But spend an hour with a Sphynx and the appearance becomes secondary to the personality: extroverted, affectionate, playful, and unwaveringly devoted.

Sphynxes are sometimes called the dogs of the cat world — they greet you at the door, follow you from room to room, and demand to be the centre of their family's world.

The Bathing Requirement

The Sphynx's most distinctive care requirement is regular bathing. Without a coat to absorb the natural oils produced by the skin, these oils accumulate — giving the skin a waxy feel and producing an odour if not managed. A weekly bath with a gentle, cat-safe shampoo resolves this entirely.

Most Sphynxes that have been acclimatised to bathing from kittenhood tolerate it well. Emirates Kitten Haven kittens are introduced to the bathing routine before leaving us, which significantly eases the process for new owners.

Ear Cleaning

Sphynxes produce more ear wax than coated breeds — again because there is no fur in the ear canal to absorb it. Weekly ear cleaning with a veterinarian-recommended solution is necessary. Untreated wax accumulation can lead to infection.

Your veterinarian can demonstrate the correct technique at your first post-adoption appointment. Once mastered, it takes less than two minutes per week.

Temperature Management in the UAE

The UAE's warm climate is broadly beneficial for the Sphynx — the breed feels the cold acutely and benefits from ambient warmth. However, aggressive air conditioning in UAE homes can make interiors uncomfortably cold for a hairless cat.

Monitor your Sphynx's comfort levels during the summer months when indoor AC is at maximum. Provide warm, insulated sleeping spots away from direct air conditioning flow. In cooler months, a cat-specific sweater or blanket is a sensible addition.

Diet and Nutrition

Sphynxes have a higher metabolic rate than coated breeds and burn calories more rapidly maintaining their body temperature. They require a calorie-dense diet — premium wet food forms an excellent base, supplemented with high-quality dry food if desired.

Do not underfeed a Sphynx. Their natural body warmth depends on adequate caloric intake. Discuss specific dietary recommendations with your UAE veterinarian, particularly in relation to heart health — HCM is a known concern in the breed.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Are Sphynx cats hypoallergenic?

Not entirely. The Sphynx produces the Fel d 1 protein in saliva and skin secretions that triggers most cat allergies. However, many people who react to coated cats tolerate Sphynxes better in practice. If allergies are a concern, spend time with a Sphynx before committing.

How often do Sphynx cats need to be bathed?

Once weekly is the standard recommendation. Some owners bathe every 10-14 days depending on how quickly oils accumulate on their specific cat's skin. Regular bathing prevents odour and skin buildup.

Are Sphynx cats good with children?

Yes — Sphynxes are extremely tolerant and sociable. Their people-oriented nature makes them excellent family cats, though children should be taught to handle them gently as their bare skin is more sensitive than a coated cat's.
