Temperament
Character & Personality
Ragdoll
The Ragdoll is among the most gentle and affectionate of all pedigree cat breeds. They are notably tolerant — patient with children, accepting of other pets, and calm in new situations. Ragdolls tend to greet their owners at the door, follow them from room to room, and settle contentedly in laps for long stretches. They are quiet cats with soft, melodic voices, and they rarely display aggression. Their docile nature makes them ideal companions for families seeking a serene, deeply affectionate cat.
Sphynx
The Sphynx is frequently described as dog-like in its loyalty and affection. They greet visitors, follow their owners everywhere, and seek physical warmth and contact with an endearing persistence. They are playful, acrobatic, and entertaining — performing with theatrical flair for an appreciative audience. Despite their dramatic appearance, they are profoundly gentle and deeply social. A Sphynx left alone for long periods may become anxious; they truly thrive as the cherished centre of their family's world.
Grooming
Coat & Grooming Requirements
Ragdoll
The Ragdoll's beautiful silken coat is surprisingly easy to maintain. Unlike many long-haired breeds, Ragdolls have a coat that does not mat easily. Two to three gentle brushing sessions per week with a soft slicker brush or wide-toothed comb will keep the coat in excellent condition and minimise shedding. Regular ear cleaning, nail trimming, and dental hygiene complete the routine.
Sphynx
The Sphynx's grooming routine is unique: rather than brushing, it centres on skin care. A weekly warm bath with a gentle, cat-safe shampoo removes accumulated body oils. After bathing, dry thoroughly to prevent chilling. Their large ears need weekly cleaning with a cotton pad and veterinary-recommended ear cleanser. Nails should be trimmed regularly as oil can accumulate around the nail beds. Despite seeming more intensive, most Sphynx owners find this routine becomes a deeply bonding weekly ritual.
Family & Home
Family Compatibility & UAE Living
Ragdoll
Ragdolls are exceptional family cats. Their patience with children, tolerance of handling, and gentle nature make them ideal for families with young ones. They tend to go limp rather than scratch or bite when overstimulated — though respectful interaction should always be encouraged. They coexist beautifully with gentle dogs and other cats. Their social, loving temperament means they genuinely thrive in a family environment.
Ragdolls are indoor cats and should never be allowed outdoors unsupervised — their trusting, non-aggressive nature leaves them vulnerable in the outside world. They require a high-quality diet and regular veterinary check-ups including cardiac screening. As a large breed, joint health is also worth monitoring. Provide climbing structures and gentle interactive play to keep them stimulated. Ragdolls are social cats and can become lonely if left alone for extended periods.
Sphynx
Sphynx cats are among the most family-friendly of all breeds. Their social, enthusiastic temperament means they embrace everyone — children, guests, other cats, and dogs — with warmth and curiosity. They thrive in lively households where their social needs are met. They are gentle despite their exuberance and rarely react aggressively. For a family seeking a cat that truly integrates into every aspect of household life, the Sphynx is an exceptional choice.
Without a coat to absorb body oils, Sphynx cats require weekly bathing to prevent skin buildup. This is best introduced in kittenhood to ensure they tolerate it comfortably. Their large ears accumulate wax more readily than coated breeds and require weekly gentle cleaning. The skin should be monitored for sun sensitivity and dryness. A high-quality, calorie-rich diet supports their higher metabolism — hairless cats expend more energy maintaining body temperature. In the UAE climate, ensure they are never exposed to direct sun or extreme cold from air conditioning.
