The British Shorthair Temperament: What Every Owner Should Know
Understanding the characteristically calm, independent, and deeply loyal nature of the British Shorthair — and how to nurture it in your home.

Not all breeders are created equal. These questions help you separate responsible, ethical breeders from those who prioritise profit over welfare.
The UAE pedigree cat market has grown rapidly, and with that growth has come significant variation in breeding standards. Finding a reputable breeder requires research, patience, and a willingness to ask direct questions — and to walk away if the answers are evasive or unsatisfactory.
The best breeders welcome scrutiny. They have nothing to hide and understand that informed buyers make the best long-term owners.
Kittens raised in a family home, underfoot and surrounded by human activity, are socialised differently — and more thoroughly — than those raised in a cattery environment. Ask specifically: are the kittens born and raised inside the family home? Do they have daily human contact from birth?
The answer tells you a great deal about the socialisation standard you can expect, which is the single greatest predictor of a kitten's long-term temperament.
Every responsible breeder tests their breeding cats for the hereditary conditions relevant to their breed — HCM (heart disease) in Maine Coons and Ragdolls, PKD in Persians, PK Deficiency in Bengals, and so on. Testing should be annual for progressive conditions like HCM.
Ask for the specific test results — not just a verbal assurance. A reputable breeder will produce documentation without hesitation.
Your kitten should leave with its first FVRCP vaccination completed, a veterinary health certificate, and microchip documentation. Ask to see the original veterinary documents — not a breeder-produced summary.
Also ask whether the kitten has been treated for parasites (worms, fleas) and what the treatment schedule has been.
A reputable breeder will invite you to visit. This is non-negotiable. Meeting the mother cat (and ideally the father) tells you about the temperament you are likely to see in your kitten. Seeing the environment tells you about the standard of care.
Be cautious of any breeder who insists on handover in a neutral location, who only deals through intermediaries, or who makes repeated excuses for why a visit is not possible.
Exceptional breeders remain available to their owners for the lifetime of the cat. They want updates, are happy to answer questions about health or behaviour, and are the first point of contact if circumstances ever require rehoming.
This level of ongoing commitment is the mark of someone who breeds out of genuine passion rather than commercial interest.
FAQ
Registered breeders affiliate with recognised breed registries (TICA, CFA, WCF) and their breeding cats carry traceable pedigree documentation. Unregistered breeders may produce healthy kittens, but without pedigree registration, there is no independent verification of lineage or health testing.
Yes: kittens available immediately without a waiting list, no veterinary documentation, refusal to allow visits, kittens available younger than 12 weeks, no questions asked about your home or lifestyle, and no post-purchase support.
Pet shop kittens rarely come with the socialisation, health testing, or provenance verification that responsible breeders provide. We strongly advise purchasing directly from a registered, home-based breeder.
